We all love pets. As proof, based on the RSPCA report in May 2018, about 62% of Australians own a pet. Many would say pets are like members of the family, so of course, you would want to keep them safe and sound from any hazards.  Just like kids, if you don’t keep an eye on them, they may reach electrical safety, cables, or outlets which can result in a serious injury.

It takes a very little amount of electricity to cause severe injury or worse, death to your pet. Hence, it’s important to take all safety precautions before allowing your pets to walk around the house. Here are some safety tips you can implement to protect your pets.

BUY QUALITY EQUIPMENT

Avoid purchasing cheap power cords, extension cords, or mobile phone chargers. Premium cables may hurt your pocket, but cheaper ones are more likely to overheat and cause sparks. It protects your pet from faulty cords that can cause harm.

KEEP CORDS/CABLES AWAY FROM YOUR PETS

Cords and cables are found everywhere in your home. Ensure to keep an eye on your pets from chewing them, by tying several cords together and placing them behind your furniture. You can also buy cords that have a bitter agent to keep your pet from chewing them.

UNPLUG WHEN NOT IN USE

We have the habit of leaving devices plugged in even when not in use. But electrocution or fire may happen without your knowledge while your pet roams around the house whilst you sleep. It’s a good idea to unplug cords when not in use to keep your pets safe. In addition to this, it can save you some money on your energy bills too.

KEEP BULBS OUT OF REACH

Halogen bulbs can get extremely hot and can become a fire hazard if accidentally knocked over by your pet. There are other bulbs too which emit toxic chemicals when broken. Make sure all working bulbs are away from pet play areas. Dispose of damaged bulbs properly.

BE WARY OF WATER

Everyone knows that water is not a friend of electricity. Be cautious about leaving electrical devices near sinks and bathtubs, or any other places where water is present.

PAY ATTENTION TO PLUG SOCKETS

Make sure you fully plug devices into their sockets. A small part of exposed prongs can cause serious injury if nuzzled by a wet nose or licked by your pet.

HAVE AN ELECTRICITY-FREE AREA

You may allow your pets to walk around the house when you’re around. Create an area at home that’s free from power outlets, electrical devices, and cords. It is the safest approach to prevent accidents.

TRAIN YOUR PET

First, you need to know how to train your pet. Cats do not like bitter agents so they’ll definitely avoid areas with citrus spray. Rabbits, ferrets, and guinea pigs can be kept away by loud noises. Ensure your pets have toys or chew foods, so they don’t go looking for something to play or eat which may lead them to a power cord.

BE THUNDER THOUGHTFUL

Pets are usually scared of thunderstorms. It can also be dangerous to them. If your pets live outdoors, bring them in during a bad storm. Make sure your indoor pets are secured.

ALSO, CONSIDER OUTDOOR ELECTRICAL

Pets like dogs and rabbits love to dig. If you have electrical cables underground, double-check if they are deep enough before allowing your pets to go on a treasure hunt.

Your pets depend safety on your 24/7. Taking into account simple precautions may help you and your pets to enjoy worry-free days and nights.
