Brrrr. Can you feel that chilly air?

We certainly can.

As Netflix-indoors-please-season fully kicks in, it’s no wonder we’re switching on the heating and/or that electric blanket without thinking twice.

The only problem is dealing with your energy bill at the end of the month.

And with your heater making up as much as 50% of your total home energy use, that’s a lot of the money at the end of the day!

So what can we do about this?

Tips to Keep Your Energy Bill Down

As the temperatures drop, there are several practical steps you can take to keep your energy bill from skyrocketing during the winter months. To make sure you’re prepared, we’ve put together some useful tips on how you can save on your energy bills this winter.

Insulate your Home

Our first recommendation is to invest in effective insulation for your home. This acts as a barrier to heat flow and helps you to prevent it from escaping. Insulating your ceiling, floors and walls, is a great way to reduce your reliance on your heating system.

A major bonus is this helps regulate the temperature in your home all year-round, as you can stay cool in summer too, with insulation preventing warm air entering your home. That therefore means less use of your air conditioner, and therefore, a lower energy bill.

Use your washing machine on cold rather than hot

Did you know? Most of the energy used by your washer comes from warming up the water for a cycle. Therefore, switching to cold water uses less energy and helps keep your energy bill down.

Plus cold water is great if you want to preserve the colour in your clothes and stop it from shrinking easily – so you don’t need to worry about missing out from warm water.

Don’t use the shower to warm up

We know – it’s super tempting. It’s freezing outside so you jump in the shower more than once a day – sometimes to just keep warm.  However, heating your water can account for 20% of your household energy use. Avoid the temptation and wrap up in layers when you can.

Compare Energy Providers

It’s always a good idea to compare energy deals with different retailers to see if you can get a better deal. By comparing providers regularly, you could be saving significantly on your energy bills, particularly if you are on an older plan!

With  Econnex Comparison tool, you can compare a broad range of retailers and their tariffs and rates for your area all in one place – and search for a better deal in just a few minutes.

Simply enter your postcode or address, approximate electricity or gas usage for a particular period, and choose your desired connection date.

Don’t fret this winter – these are just some of the key ways you can keep your energy costs down.  Try some of these and see how you go for at least a couple of months.

You may just surprise yourself by how much you can save!
